Talking Strategery
I have formally titled my web strategy to this point as Operation Confusing Freedom. Informally, my tactics can best be described as two page-views and a cloud of dust. I don’t really mind, much. Let’s face it, I’m not selling anything, besides myself, and if I’m not flying off the shelves, it’s not effecting my bottom-line. I do this because I want to and that hasn’t changed. If anything, I want to do more.
In this case, more means doing a podcast. I love writing. I love writing but there are times at which my mind is driven to express itself verbally. If I try to translate this verbal torrent into written words, something sometimes gets lost in the transition. Whether I can’t quite translate the feverish intensity of my feeling or some other more or less ineffable auditory quality I’m not sure but sometimes something is just lost. I have the technology. I have the capability. I can make this happen. I will make this happen. I’m just not sure when.
Or what it will be about. I’ve found that I’ve gravitated towards podcasts that are either highly specific or in which the hosts talk more or less about about things that, more or less, concern them. Since I’m not qualified to talk about any specific field (and I don’t want to), I’ll probably just babble about stuff that’s on my mind, and recruit some of my friends, and maybe some strangers as well, to lend a hand- well, actually a voice but you get the idea.
It should be an interesting exercise if only because while I fancy myself a competent speaker, I have zero experience in this sort of work. I’m sure the results of at least my freshman attempts will be unintentionally comedic even if they are painfully unfunny. As long as they are never uninteresting. The worst emotion I can think to evoke is no emotion at all. Apathy is death. Apathy is the mind-killer.
On the work front, I’m starting to explore taking on some freelance work. In reality, it’s more than explore since I’ve already taken on one and it appears I’ll be starting on another. In this bleak environment, the more work the better. Beyond this simple truth, I have a couple of goals I’m working towards. First, I want to build a more varied portfolio (which I still need to get uploaded, damn you procrastination!) and, being that I have a steady day job, I’m in a position to take on smaller, bite-sized jobs that I don’t have to depend on to feed me but, at the same time, I can use to broaden the scope of my work. Second, I just want to get out and do some different things, both to prove and expand my proven skill-set and just do, maybe mixing in some networking along the way.
I’ve been trawling Craigslist like the Japanese fishing fleet, sending out exploratory lines at anything that looks interesting. Like I said, I’ve got a couple of buns in the oven, when they turn golden brown, I’ll be sure to share. Of course, if you or anyone you know needs a little web work or written word, I won’t feel less of you if you drop me a line. I won’t bite… much.

What do you think?
