T.S. Elliot, or somebody who looked a lot like him if you looked at him in a certain way, told me once that April was the cruelest month. Given the temperature the other day in New York City was ninety degrees in the shade, that the city had bypassed Spring all together for a sweltering August, I was, in that moment, almost faint and weak from thirst, inclined to agree. “By god,” I thought, “soon it’ll all be a- a-” “A wasteland”, ersatz Elliot answered, “exactly my point. Breeding lilacs and all that.” I don’t know anything about that lilacs bit, I’m a writer not a gardener.

I’ve come to a decision. I do not like the term, “blogger”. I don’t know what, exactly, a “weblog” is but I don’t like it. Okay, I know what a weblog is as a practical matter but what is it, really? I’m not logging webs or webbing logs. I’m not keeping a log of the web nor keeping a web of a log. I’ve seen logs, loafs, bars, and loads, and my interest in them is, at best, tangential. The only webs I’m interested in are the spun-out lairs of the spiders in my bathroom and what interest I had in those I have already expressed. No, whatever currency the term “weblog” had with me is spent. I must define myself elsewhere.

Things have been quiet lately around here, the sort of eerie quiet that inspires tales of death or, in my case, extreme apathy. However, in this particular case, nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, things are slogging steadily ahead here at Terwilliger HQ. Like Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory after Slugworth’s betrayal, the gates are closed but the chimneys, productively and, perhaps, ominously, are still billowing with a hidden feverish activity.

First things first. I haven’t talked about it in a long while but the short film I wrote and my sister directed, The Power of Freedom, will be heading to the Cannes Film Festival. We’ll both be tagging along with it, more or less- her more, me less. Last week she cut the trailer for it:

Feel free to watch it (and rate it!) directly on Vimeo and YouTube.

As part of this Sherman’s march to Cannes, I’m trying to put together a little podcast roundtable about the fest. My sister has been once already. This will be my first of hopefully many trips.

To that end, I have been busy as a beaver trying to write a full-length script to take with me. As I hope to sell this little gem, I can’t share too much about it now save that I think I’ve got a pretty good premise (I really like it anyway) but I’ve got a LOT of work to do between now and the festival to whip it into shape.

In totally unrelated news, I just saw a trailer for Valhalla Rising, a Mads Mikkelsen powered Viking movie. It looks good. Then again, Severed Ways looked good and we all know how that turned out. Hope springs eternal.

I got the email this morning. My run for the screenplay championship came up short. I needed to finish in the top 5 and I came in 6th. I had a good run and a lot of fun writing. I’m definitely proud and happy with each of the short shorts that I wrote and I think the experience has been good for my writing. That said, I’d be lying if I’m not disappointed with the finish. Those are the breaks. Nothing to do but keep on trucking.

I woke up this morning to find that the results for the screenplay championship challenge 2 were posted. Somehow, someway, yours truly found himself at the top of the leaderboard. My screenplay for challenge 2, “Bishop Takes McQueen” took first place in the group. My first screenplay took second place. Together, my combined score propelled me to the top of the group. We are the champions, my friend.

There’s one more challenge for this round (I think) this weekend. I’ll get the genre, location, and prop at midnight tonight. Let’s see what happens. With the snow coming down like an upended snow globe, I won’t have much else to do.

Looking back on this last challenge, I was definitely thrown out of my comfort zone. The genre was Romantic Comedy (not my strong suit), the location was an aquarium, and the prop was a chess board. It took me quite a while to get a handle on what I wanted to do but, once I got everything settled out, it came out of my mind onto the page very quickly. It doesn’t hurt that it’s only five pages. If you’re intrigued or morbidly curious, here it is.

On a vaguely related tangent, I’m set to see Mishima: A Life in Four Acts tonight with a post-flick Q and A with director Paul Shrader. I’m looking forward to it.

I have no excuse and I actually had a lot to say but somewhere between my brain and my keyboard, it all got lost. In order to absolve myself of guilt, I shall blame Saints Row 2 which I’ve been playing on my 360. Perhaps I should take Dr. Phil’s Gaming Addictive Behavior Audit. Probably not.

I’m home from work this morning because I am having a couch delivered. My speed at furnishing my apartment could be described as glacial but this is a big step. Actually, it’s the first brand-new couch that I’ve ever bought. I am excited… provided they can get it into the buildings. I think I’ve mastered the arcane formulations and calculations of mass and space but I have my doubts. I shall soon see if the mind can really conquer matter.

I’ve written two short screenplays (one inspired by the Brooklyn Film Race). My sister, an aspiring film director, is planning on filming both of them, beginning next week with the longer of the two (as yet untitled). Here are the cast and crew calls:

CAST

Untitled Student Project

The project is a dark comedic short that takes an offbeat look at climbing the corporate ladder. The project will be shot across two weekends in November in and around Philadelphia. Our budget is very limited, so we will not be able to offer compensation, but meals and a reel will be provided.

We are looking for hard-working volunteers who share our passion for excellence in filmmaking. We will be taking this short to the Cannes International Film Festival as well as others.

This is a great opportunity for anyone trying to expand their resume and their reel!

For reasons of only pure, unadulterated laziness, I took the better part of ten days off.
